Hometown hero Bradley Weiss and Austrian Carina Wasle captured the 15th annual Fedhealth XTERRA South Africa Championship elite titles on cool, cloudy morning at the Elgin-Grabouw Country Club in the Western Cape today.

It’s the second SA victory for the reigning XTERRA World Champion, who picked up his first home country win in 2016, and the third for Wasle, who also won here in 2009 and 2011.

“It’s my favorite race of the year,” exclaimed Weiss, who was wearing the World Champion rainbow stripes on his racing kit for the first time.

Weiss exited the water in third but took over the lead by the first big climb on the bike and never looked back, talking the tape in 2:28:55.

“Once I was back in the lead I just settled into my own rhythm,” he said. “My lead kept building. I just focused on executing a good race. To win on home soil is very special. I would like to thank Fedhealth and Stillwater Sports for putting on an incredible show.”

Fellow South African Michael Lord finished second, while Brice Daubord from France finished third. Of note, Ironman star Sebastian Kienle withdrew prior to the event. He posted a note on his twitter account @SebastianKienle of a “minor crash that slightly bruised his ribs.”

In the women’s chase Wasle led from wire-to-wire and crossed the line in 2:51:43.

“I had a very good race,” said Wasle. “I always start a race with the goal to win. My swim was perfect. I was first on the bike and just kept my lead. I am very happy to win today. It was a perfect race on a fantastic course!”

South African stars Hayley Preen and Johandri Leicester placed second and third, respectively.

Jeremy Yatt, the principal officer of the title sponsors from Fedhealth, said “The Fedhealth XTERRA Grabouw is a great event for the serious off-road triathlete, where you can clinch one of the various age group qualification slots for the XTERRA World Championships taking place later this year. Grabouw offers unforgiving, yet breath-taking terrain, and the chance to bring your family to either participate or spur you on across the finish line. It’s no wonder it’s the biggest XTERRA in the world.”

The main event, which was the first of 35 majors on the 2018 XTERRA World Tour, combined a 1.5-kilometer swim, 26K mountain bike and 12K trail run.

Hot-on-the-heels of unveiling the third incarnation of its top-end, flagship wetsuit, the HUUB Archimedes III, Derby-based HUUB has introduced the new HUUB Axiom, which takes an entry-level price point, retailing at £199.99 ($278.24), for those new to the sports of triathlon and open water swimming.

A release from HUUB states… ‘Every now and again HUUB launches something never before achieved from a challenge set by listening to their broad range of customers. Open water swimming has taken off at a great pace, and the sport demanded a suit for this market with full smooth skin properties below £200.’

HUUB’s founder and owner Dean Jackson, added “It wasn’t easy, with the quality of production and design needed… but we’ve mastered it! And honestly we believe there is no better suit at the entry level price point than the Axiom.”

Axiom, retailing at £199.99 is HUUB’s new entry-level wetsuit and is positioned for the beginner triathlete or leisure and training swimmer. The smooth skin neoprene helps increase swimmers’ water speed with the optimum buoyancy of 3:5 for men and 3:3 for women.

HUUB adds that ‘Comfort is paramount, so it features a flexible low-neckline unique to HUUB for comfortable breathing, and the super-flexible underarm panel offers freedom of movement.’

We recently noticed some posts on Facebook which linked to pieces written by one Jordan Winar. Jordan recently found the world of XTERRA/off-road triathlon and has become a great fan of the sport. We were particularly intrigued by his insightful writing and interesting takes on some of the off-road multisport world’s most intriguing individuals. Jordan has granted us permission to share his posts. We think you will enjoy them just as much as we do.

-By Jordan Winar

With his eyes closed, he pretended that the sounds he was hearing were that of an airplane. The sounds of airplanes always gave him a sense of peace, probably because he had served in one of the most powerful Air Forces in the world. He knew those sounds were there to serve and protect him, whether he was in Panama during the Noriega event or at USSTRATCOM (the folks in charge of the nukes). Those sounds would make him certain of the future, but today he couldn’t shake it; he knew it wasn’t an airplane vibrating his ear drum. He squeezed his eyes a bit tighter, hoping it would help get him to a happy place. He thought of memories of his three perfect children or his best friend, his beautiful wife. He thought of summer days: him, his dog, and his truck cruising around town, windows down, Jack Johnson on the radio, and the smell of fresh cut grass in the air. No matter what memory he tried to recall, he couldn’t shake it.

air tran specialist.jpg

He opened his eyes and was brought back to reality. He saw and smelled white, sterile, stale plastic. He was lodged deep inside of what looked like a donut, which at the time was one of his favorite foods. He was laying lifeless, on his back inside of a CAT scan for the third time in 90 days. Helpless, a position and word that didn’t exist to him. He wasn’t comfortable inside this tomb-like technology, but his comfortable lifestyle is what landed him in it. You may even know that lifestyle.

You’re a nice, outgoing person. A good neighbor. You’re a good employee. You set resolutions each year that seem to disappear a bit faster than you’d like, but at least you try. You have a nice house and car, but you took down the white picket fence because your life is not perfect; it’s better defined as comfortable.

The guy laying inside that CAT scan, 40 lbs overweight, staring at the white plastic was the epitome of comfortable just 3 months ago; before this strange illness popped up. His favorite question at night to himself each was, “which flavor of ice cream will I have tonight?” Now, the question he was asking each night before he closed his eyes was, “am I dying?”

This stuff isn’t supposed to happen to nice people like him. He was in the CAT scan, because the doctors were looking for cancer. Certainly, he didn’t want them to find any, but if they did, he wants it to be early on. If the scans came back clear, he promised to make some changes, but promises are always broken. He didn’t need to make any promises; he needed to make it a necessity. A necessity for his wife, his kids, his dogs, and his friends. His friends that he had at that time, and the friends he had yet to meet.

The scans came back clear. Phew, but why in the world did this happen? A question that science may never prove, but maybe it happened just so that he would make the world a better place!

His three months of uncertainty weren’t a dream like George Bailey’s in It’s a Wonderful Life. No ghosts visited him like Scrooge from A Christmas Carol. This guy lived 90 days with the the grim reaper at his front door. His life had an eviction notice with his name on it.

With a clean test result, he had a new lease on life; he was determined to never look back and start exercising and eating better!

Sure, we have all heard that story from a friend with the best of intentions to make a dramatic change, but we roll our eyes and wonder how long their passion to live a better, healthier life will last.

Just like this guy, you watch your friend start working out six days week. For him, it was three days of cardio and three days of strenth training.

But this friend of ours, in six months, lost that 40 pounds. While on a trail run with a friend, his life and our life would be forever changed because we get to live better lives because of the man we call Mr. XTERRA, race director, multiple time XTERRA overall champion, ambassador, friend, brother, son, father, husband and most importantly, Marcus Barton.

THE REST OF THE STORY

While on that trail run, 40 pounds lighter, his friend asked him if he had ever done a triathlon. Of course, he hadn’t, but he thought it would keep him motivated to stay in shape. That triathlon was called XTERRA, which is a style of triathlon that consists of an open water swim, and off-road bike, and an off-road run. At the time, he didn’t even own a mountain bike, but he believed it wasn’t about resources; it was about being resourceful. So, he picked one up for $50 at a garage sale. The rest is history as a decade has pasted since his first XTERRA race!

Marcus, why have you stuck with XTERRA for the last 10 years?

“Because road triathlons, in my opinion, are so boring. There’s so much variety in the different XTERRA venues and some beautiful countryside. My favorite venue I’d have to say is Oak Mountain (Alabama) for three reasons. First, it’s a BLAST of a race course. Second, I am from there, so I get to visit my family. My dad and brother come out to watch and scoot all over the bike course to catch us at numerous places. Lastly, I get to see all the XTERRA staff!”

Marcus isn’t a pro-triathlete, but he expects to perform at his best, and his best is on top of podiums. Just take a look at his results and you just have to laugh. It’s littered with 1st place overall finishes in 2017 at Oak Mountain trail run, XTERRA Fort Yargo Triathlon, XTERRA Panther Creek and if he didn’t finish 1st, he is still on the podium with a 3rd place overall finish at the USAT Off-Road Triathlon Nationals and 21st and top American in his division at the ITU Cross Triathlon WORLD Championships. Certainly, a different position than how we first saw him at the beginning of this article.

Marcus, why does it matter to you to win and perform at your highest level?

“It pushes me to train hard, be a little more regimented with eating and generally stay healthy. For me, it’s a motivator. Even if I don’t win, I want to perform the best that I can. The minute I stop trying to do that, I’ll probably let other things slide and fall out of shape.”

What is your favorite vicory over the years?

“Winning XTERRA Whitewater, which is a race I created and race directed the first two years”

Whitewater is a special place in America and is an Olympic training facility and is also a vacation destination in itself. Marcus has passed the torch since setting up the race. Now he runs the transition clinic the night before the race, which is where you will find him sharing stories, showing transition tips and tricks, and giving out free samples from his sponsors.

While he has sponsors, he has a full time gig like the rest of us. So, when he’s not racing, he’s a top performer at work, which is what indirectly brought him to Charlotte. After the United States Air Force, he made a move into Information Technology. He became a Microsoft Certified Trainer and consultant. Before his current position at Dell, he was recruited by Microsoft to take a job in Charlotte, where he still lives after 18 years. As you can imagine, Marcus doesn’t find himself on the couch much any more.

Marcus, How do you have time for everything? Can you give us a glimpse into a typical week?

“I generally do two-a-days during the week. I’m swimming three days a week in the mornings and doing some other workout in the AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The evenings, I’m usually running or biking. The weekends consist of the longer workouts with running and biking. Every now and then, there’s a brick thrown in. I carry a typical work day on the week days, but I do travel a bit. I cover North Carolina and South Carolina for work, so it’s not uncommon for me to spend several hours a day in the car driving. Some of my longer trips involve overnight stays, so I have to work my training schedule around it. My kids are all in their 20’s, so they’re sort of doing their own thing now and Alba (his wife) supports me by being flexible with my hectic schedule.”

Conclusion

Because of that 90 day scare, we all know Marcus Barton. He has made our lives better. He has helped people across the country find what they are looking for through XTERRA. He has hoisted trophies like a true champion. He has shared houses in Spain with the likes of Josiah MiddaughCody WaiteRife Hilgartner and Dan Kimball, one of his fondest memories.

Marcus Barton playing a practical joke

He laughs thinking about giving an XTERRA 18 wheeler parking tickets, or taking the cutout of Kahuna Dave’s head, made by the XTERRA staff, at Oak Mountain one year when he couldn’t make it and he toured it all over the southeast (last seen here). He remembers deciding at a lunch, on a whim, to enter a race that was 7 hours away in West Virginia and winning it. He’s a friend to all.

Marcus, the season hasn’t started yet, but who do you think is going to win the XTERRA World Championships in 2018?

“I think Josiah Middaugh is going to kill it. I don’t know why, but I think we’re gonna see a volcano God erupt with him. I think on the women’s side, Duffy will be hard to beat. The waves will be back, as I predict that it will be another wet and sloppy race.”

So if you’re going through an uncertain time, think of Marcus and make some dramatic changes. Let’s all be grateful for the scare and that he defied the odds. Let his lesson, be our lesson and not wait for a scare. Skip the 90 days of uncertainty and just sign up for a race this XTERRA season! You will be glad you did and you can thank Marcus later for all the friends you are going to make this year!

Next Level Endurance Off-Road Training Camp In Scottsdale AZ Will Be April 26-29

Mimi Stockton, 5x XTERRA Age Group World Champ, author of the Couch to Trail series on XTERRAplanet.com, and partner at Next Level Endurance will be hosting an off-road specific triathlon camp in Scottsdale, Arizona from April 26-29.

DirtTRI is happy to share specifics of what can be expected at the camp. It looks like a good one, maybe we will drop in. If you sign up before February 28th you SAVE $76.

Find our interview with Mimi below.

Scottsdale Trail Running

Interview

DirtTRI: What level of athlete is the camp best suited for?

Mimi: The Xterra camp is open to all levels.  We are able to do this because we will have multiple coaches on-site.  We welcome beginners because we want to introduce them to the joys of off-road racing, and we also welcome intermediate and even advanced off-road racers and enthusiasts.  The more experienced attendees will have a bit more freedom to wander the trails and explore.

DirtTRI: Will the swim, bike, and run activities be more technique focused or fitness or both?

Mimi: Definitely both.  We will have some lecture periods, a strength analysis by EVO Ultrafit, a run analysis and a swim analysis (I will be a certified Total Immersion instructor  by the start of camp) for each individual and those will be mixed in with swim workouts, mountain bike rides, and trail runs.  One morning we will also focus on mountain bike technique and the importance of it to becoming a faster, more confident rider.

DirtTRI: How many athletes are you taking?

Mimi: We can accommodate 12 athletes.

DirtTRI: Why did you choose Scottsdale for your camp?

Mimi: Besides being an area of sheer beauty, it offers everything necessary for a successful off-road camp: Perfect weather, beautiful scenery, and a plethora of bike and running trails. The trails run the gamut from beginner flow trails to very technical, rocky downhills.  There is a wide variety of terrain for all levels.   They are more rocky than rooty (this is the desert after all) and there are plenty of hills to climb for interval training.

DirtTRI: What is your plan if the weather turns bad?

Mimi: We will press on!  We race in cold, we race in rain, we race in cold rain.  That’s the XTERRA way.  #Livemore

DirtTRI: What about lodging?

Mimi: We have rented a gigantic house (complete with pool and basketball) court for the weekend.  Campers will have the option of staying at the house or staying at a hotel nearby the house.

DirtTRI: What does a typical day at the camp look like?

Mimi: Check out our website camp page for all the details and a full itinerary:

https://nextlevelendurance.net/camps

DirtTRI: What are some of your accolades and accomplishments that warrant you being the lead of an XTERRA camp?

Mimi: I have been racing XTERRA for 9 years and have raced all over the world.  I am also a 5-time and reigning XTERRA Age Group World Champion, and earned a bronze medal at the 2015 ITU Cross World Championships in Italy.  I have also competed in and won both Indiana and Michigan mountain bike series races for the past several years.

I currently coach several athletes and understand what it takes to be successful, both mentally and physically.  Furthermore, I am a USAT Level 1 Certified Coach.

Tom Kiely, the former CEO and co-founder of XTERRA, has launched Tourism Sports Marketing Int’l, which is designed to assist destinations in developing strategic plans that would maximize economic impact and marketing benefits. Kiely will serve as CEO of the new Honolulu-based company.

“With my XTERRA mission complete, I am going back to my marketing and strategic planning roots and launching a business which focuses on the vibrant business sector in the tourism sports area,” Kiely said. “Over these past years, sports-related tourism has grown as a valued marketing tool for destinations and therefore we have formed an advisory group to assist a few select clients in developing strategic plans to maximize the benefits from this area.”

Kiely launched Tourism Sports Marketing Int’l following the recent sale of XTERRA/Team Unlimited, LLC to Portland, Oregon-based XTERRA Sports Unlimited, LLC. In 2017, XTERRA offered more than 300 off-road triathlons and trail running events in more than 30 countries and produced 10 adventure shows for international distribution.

Santa Cruz Bicycles and others launch campaign to help restore trails after California wildfires

Santa Cruz Bicycles, Fox, Shimano, White Industries and WTB have donated a pair of custom-painted Santa Cruz Hightower LTs that are being raffled to support the “Back On Trail” campaign, which will fund trail reconstruction projects in the wake of recent wildfires in California.

The month long fundraising campaign will benefit the Redwood Empire Mountain Bike Alliance and the Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers, who will each spearhead reconstruction efforts in their respective regions.

Santa Cruz Bicycles graphic designer Campbell Steers said he drew inspiration from CalFire firefighting equipment for the custom graphics and build spec on the bikes. One of the bikes is red and one is white.

“We talked to our shops, reps and customers in the areas affected by the fires and above all they expressed a real desire for a return to normalcy,” said Santa Cruz CEO Joe Graney. “We all know how a good bike ride makes you feel, and we want to help people get back to that.”

We all know how a good bike ride makes you feel, and we want to help people get back to that. Santa Cruz CEO Joe Graney

Entries to win the bikes are available by making donations at backontrail.org — with one raffle entry for every $5 donated. The campaign runs the entire month of February, with the two winners chosen on March 1.

The bikes are valued at $10,000 each and feature not only custom graphics, but a custom parts spec from California-based companies.

Petaluma-based White Industries is located closest to the Northern California fire zone and supplied the cranks, bottom bracket, hubs and headsets for the bikes; Scotts Valley-based Fox supplied forks, shocks and dropper posts; Irvine-based Shimano supplied brakes, shifters, derailleurs and cassettes; and Mill Valley-based WTB supplied tires and saddles. The parts will be mounted to Santa Cruz Hightower LT frames and the wheels built up using Santa Cruz Reserve carbon rims.

Sample bikes will be on display at Santa Rosa’s Trailhouse for two weeks, then will move to the Topa Topa Brewery in Santa Barbara on Feb. 18. The actual prize bikes will be made in the winners’ chosen size.

Finish Line’s new tubeless tire sealant will last the life of the tire, company says

Finish Line’s Tubeless Tire Sealant solves problems presented by other sealants, the company said.

“We wanted to develop a sealant that wouldn’t have any of the negative characteristics of existing latex-based sealants,” said Hank Krause, the president and CEO of Finish Line. “By partnering with Multi Seal, a longtime leader in industrial and military tire sealants, we have created a sealant that significantly advances the technology for tubeless bicycle tire sealants.”

The company said the sealant will not cure inside the tire once installed, so it doesn’t need to be refreshed every few months to maintain effectiveness. Instead, the company said the sealant will last the entire usable life of the tire. The sealant contains no liquid latex or ammonia and is naturally non-toxic, hypoallergenic and safe for carbon fiber rims. The sealant cleans up easily with water. The company also said the sealant is not affected by the use of CO2 inflators.

The sealant uses DuPont Kevlar fibers called FiberLink. “FiberLink seals are extremely robust once they plug a hole. When a puncture happens, fibers rush into the wound and quickly stop air loss. As the tire flexes while it is ridden, the FiberLink mesh tightens and reinforces itself, creating a confidence-inspiring seal that will last ride-after-ride,” the company said.

The sealant will be available in 1-gallon bottles for shops and rental fleets, as well as 4 ounce, 8 ounce, and 1 liter consumer sizes. All sizes will be available from Finish Line’s domestic and international dealers in time for the 2018 season.

MSRP is $8.99 for 4 ounces; $14.99 for 8 ounces; $35.99 for 32 ounces and $139.99 for the 1 gallon container.

Frog is taking the knowledge the industry learned (or should have) from research into women’s product design and carrying it through to children’s bike design.

According to the Frog Bikes website they “set about re-designing kids’ bikes, creating a light but strong aluminum frame, and hand-picking components that offer a high performance without compromising the weight. Our bikes are now also much easier to pedal due to a unique crank design from the renowned bicycle engineer Dimitris Katsanis (of Team GB Olympic fame).  The new design reduces the space between the pedals, allowing children to push more directly down when cycling, so converting more of their energy into motion.  Only Frog applies this level of rigour to the design of kids’ bikes.”

Below Dr Tom Korff of Frog Bikes shares the companies philosophy and science behind their children’s bike design process, as well as how they choose and set up suspension forks on their MTBs.

In a previous article (see below) we shared a statement from the mayor of Legazpi City to the XTERRA Philippines organizer assuring the organizer the race would not need to be postponed and its participants are “safe and free from any flood as well as the effects of the Mayon volcano’s eruption”.

Since that time the duration and intensity of the Mayon Volcano’s eruption has increased and will now force the event to be postponed from March 4th to June 17th.

XTERRA have recently released the following statement:

Mount Mayon, the iconic landmark of Legazpi in the province of Albay, continues to effect the island of Luzon in the Philippines with “sporadic to near continuous lava fountaining, lava flow, and degassing from the summit crater,” according to a government report posted today (February 6, 2018).

As a result, the XTERRA Albay event organizers from Sunrise Events alongside XTERRA World Tour officials and the city of Legazpi have agreed to postpone the event from it’s scheduled race day of March 4, 2018 to June 17, 2018.

The new date allows time for Mother Nature to take its course and for the local government to address the needs of those who have been affected by the volcanic activities.

“The new schedule will also provide participants the confidence and comfort about traveling to Albay, and participating at the event,” said organizers in a postponement notice today.

All registrations will be transferred to the new event date; however, Sunrise Events is also giving participants the option to refund the full registration fee, or transfer registration to XTERRA Danao, which will double as the XTERRA Asia-Pacific Championship race on April 22, 2018.

With the date change, XTERRA Albay becomes the fourth of four events in the 2018 XTERRA Asia-Pacific Tour. There will be a $15,000 USD prize purse distributed to the top seven elite men and women, and a $10,000 tour bonus to the top five in the standings following XTERRA Albay on June 17.

DirtTRI’s Original Report

Published January 19, 2018

In a statement to the XTERRA Philippines organizer the mayor of Legazpi City has assured the organizer the race and its participants are “safe and free from any flood as well as the effects of the Mayon volcano’s eruption”.

In a January 16 letter Mayor Noel Rosal addressed concerns about a December “flooding incident” as well as the recent eruption of the Mayon Volcano and how those events could impact the March 4th XTERRA Albay.

We have witnessed and experienced a number of Mayon Volcano’s eruption and explosion and she has remained to her nature, that of a dainty damsel (according to legend) never erupting violently and destructively. Mayor Noel Rosal

Mayor Rosal is the mayor of Legazpi City which is the capital of the Albay province of the Philippines. The Mayon volcano stands at 8077 ft with its summit a mere 5 miles from the XTERRA Albay Puro Beach starting point. The Mayon Volcano erupted January 13th and began oozing lava on January 15 prompting XTERRA Philippines organizer, Sunrise Events to inquire as to how the eruption might effect the XTERRA Albay.

While March 4th is still several weeks away we commend Sunrise Events’ due diligence and care for the participants of XTERRA Albay.

The Mayon Volcano has erupted 51 times in the past 400 years with the most recent eruption occurring in September of 2014. Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines, and its activity is regularly monitored by PHIVOLCS from their provincial headquarters on Ligñon Hill, about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) SSE from the summit.

XTERRA Albay will take place on March 4th and is one of the most beautiful XTERRA events on the XTERRA World Tour. Last year XTERRA Albay was won by Brad Weiss and Lizzy Orchard.

Please find the full letter from the Mayor Rosal below. Thanks to Sunrise Events and XTERRA Philippines for their quick response to DirtTRI’s inquiry and for supplying an image of the letter from Mayor Rosal.

One of the worlds largest outdoor industry tradeshows moved from Utah to our backyard for the first time in 2018. It gave us a great opportunity to meet with potential partners. It is a closed show and not open to the public so we thought we would share our experience with you. As usual with anything associated with the outdoor industry there were plenty of K9 counter parts and we love our puppies.
