Did Zipp Just Launch a MTB Wheel?

Long time triathlon stalwart, Zipp, recently launched a new, as they say, category-creating wheelset (see below press release). Basically the wheel, the 30 Course, is aimed at the gravel grinder/do anything crowd.  Suddenly its a revolution to ride a road bike on dirt roads. Who knew? Evidently we could have started a trend, or incited a revolution of sorts back in 2004 when we would take to the dirt outside Boulder on Mavic 32 hole box rims in search of roads that weren’t the same ones we saw every day for endless weeks. Eh, c’est la vie, ya win some ya lose some.

Anyway, more importantly this new wheel is very mountain bike-ey. The hub options seem compatible, its tubeless ready, and the basic design is there. To make this into a 29’er mtb wheel the rim diameter might need a bit of a tweak but the widths are appropriate. All this makes us wonder; could this be a 29’er mountain bike wheel in disguise? The one drawback is that the 30 Course comes in at a slightly pudgy 1655g per set for the clinchers, about 100-300g heavier than most dedicated mtb race wheels. So, at this point there is no reason to try to make these a mtb wheel unless you happen to be a Zipp über-fan. However, considering Zipp’s proficiency with carbon fiber it seems a logical leap for them to consider creating a mountain bike wheel line. Interesting, coming from the traditionally aero focused “speed weaponry” company.

New Course of Action – 30 Course Disc-brake wheelsets

Tubeless-ready. Wide rim width. Zipp’s 30 Course Disc-brake wheelset is ready for everything.

Zipp’s 30 Course Disc-brake wheelset is a category-creating kind of aluminum wheelset. Available in tubular, clincherand tubeless-ready, the 30 Course Disc-brake is a multi-use Speed Weapon engineered for road, cyclocross, gravel and adventure riding and racing. Zipp – with more than a quarter century of technical breakthroughs including developing the first carbon wheel to win at Flanders and Roubaix – is proud to unveil the new benchmark for a durable, high-performance aluminum disc-brake wheelset.

New Aluminum-Rim Technology

  • Zipp’s first wheelset to be tubeless-ready providing the ability to run lower tire pressures without risk of “pinch flats.”
  • The 30 Course Disc-brake wheelset, with its external 25mm and internal 21mm rim widths, incorporates design innovations from the Zipp 202 Firecrest Carbon Clincher profile for low aerodynamic drag, greater stability and predictability in crosswinds. That wider rim platform allows for increased air volume, which spreads the tire casing. That helps increase the contact patch with the ground. The result is improved cornering grip and increased comfort on the road, mud and everything in between.
  • Sharp new graphics.

New Hub Technology With the 77/177D

  • Engineered for versatility, durability and simplicity. Same 77/177D hubset used in Zipp 202 and 303 Firecrest Disc-brake wheelsets.
  • Bearing preload precision set – that means no pre-load adjustment is needed.
  • Improved bearing protection and sealant.
  • Includes newly designed quick-release skewers with a wider more ergonomic handle to provide more leverage for opening and closing. When closed, lever contours neatly with the frame.
  • Thru-axle compatible. Comes with thru-axle end caps that can be swapped by hand:

– Front: 12x100mm & 15x100mm

– Rear: 12x135mm & 12x142mm

  • Proprietary flange geometry and spoke hole attachment pattern with Sapim® CX Ray® spokes to optimize torsional and lateral stiffness without sacrificing weight or robustness.
  • New distinctive hub graphics.
  • 17mm axle
  • SRAM XD driver body for 177D available separately.

All this means the 30 Course Disc-brake provides the versatility demanded by the emerging new era of road (and beyond) riding. This is a race-performance designed wheelset that delivers speed, stability, comfort and the superior power and modulation of disc braking over any terrain.

Each wheel includes Zipp thru-axle end caps; 1 Zipp skewer; 1 Zipp rim tape 700c X 20mm, and 1 Zipp tubeless valve (clincher). Rear wheel includes 1.85mm cassette spacer 10-speed compatibility. The 30 Course Disc-brake Clincher rear wheel is available with a standard 10/11 speed driver body for SRAM®/Shimano® or for Campagnolo®.
