Two elite racers overcome difficult obstacles to win at Marshall Mountain
Hundreds of mountain bikers were at Marshall Mountain on Saturday competing in the 5th Annual Missoula XC Race, a part of the USA Cycling Pro Cross Country Tour. Some of the best riders from around the world competed in the elite races, as they had to tackle a tough five-kilometer course up and down the mountain for six laps.
Lesley Paterson, 35, won the Women’s Elite Race in her first appearance at the Missoula XC with a time of 1:36:42. The San Diego resident and Scotland native was a former Xterra triathlon racer who won back-to-back world championships in the sport in 2011 and 2012. She sat in third place after the first lap but took the lead on the second lap and never relinquished it throughout the race. However, Paterson had to overcome a big setback before the race.
