Urban-Ultra X-Tri Brings Cross Triathlon To The Middle East
The Middle East is a region not often out of the media spotlight. Lately the region has received a ton of attention from the road triathlon media due to the controversial Bahrain Endurance 13 and questionable $1 Million Triple Crown, both financed by Bahraini Prince Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa. While Daniela Ryf became the first athlete to win the $1 Million Triathlon Triple Crown it remains to be seen if Ryf has actually received anything beyond the giant novelty check.
Perhaps that’s not quite a fair statement, but, considering the 2015 series saw changes in race production company, event venues, and format its safe to say much of the road tri world was pretty surprised the Triple Crown actually survived to completion much less produce a million dollar winner in Ryf. That said, most of those issues were not the fault of Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa but rather down to the all too typical business model of the World Triathlon Corporation commonly known as Ironman.
Regardless it is good to see triathlon spreading into a new market. More importantly we at DirtTRI.com were very happy to discover the Middle East region is not exclusively limited to road triathlon. Yep, they have a cross tri and it looks like a good one.
