Meowler Multisport Race Announces Prize Purse

Meowler Multisport Race Announces Prize PurseThe Original Meowler Off-Road Multisport Race just announced they will be offer a $3,000 cash prize purse for the bike-run-bike event on May 22, 2016. The event takes place in the Hartman Rocks Recreation Area just outside of Gunnison, Colorado, USA. If you’re looking for a challenging off-road duathlon high up in the Rockies Mountains, you don’t want to miss this one.

Gunnison, Colorado – March 29, 2016 – Discerning, adventurous, curious and fit endurance athletes will descend on Gunnison, Colorado on May 22nd to contest the 2nd annual Original Meowler multisport race at the Hartman Rocks Recreation Area on BLM Public Lands, a singletrack mecca. The fastest and best prepared will be vying for their part of a $3,000 cash prize purse generously donated by the Gunnison Crested Butte Tourism Association and Gunnison Trails.

No walk in the park, this 40-mile affair is chock full of technically challenging singletrack mountain biking and trail running. The format is bike, run, bike, but there is a unique twist.

“The transition area for the 10-mile run loop is in the middle of nowhere, essentially inaccessible and miles from the start/finish area”

“By rule, competitors must be completely self-supported as far as their gear. This means ride in your running shoes, run in your riding shoes, or bring your runners along in a pack,”explained Meowler creator and race director, Dave Wiens. The latter is the easy choice for most competitors. Since no outside support is allowed, Wiens says, “Park your car, pull your pack on, throw your leg over your bike and line up! No fuss.”

There will be well-stocked aid stations throughout, including during the bike legs, at the transition area, and an aid station at around the halfway point on the run. Aid station frequency will increase towards the end of the race.

The Original Meowler is the younger sibling of the infamous Original Growler mountain bike races, now in their 9th year. The entire Growler course is used and the run begins at about the halfway point in that course and continues even farther to the southwest on the Aberdeen Loop trails.

The Original Meowler is presented by Gunnison Trails, a non-profit trail organization, and 100% of all proceeds go to Gunnison Trails, Western State Colorado Mountain Rescue Team, the Gunnison Country Food Pantry and the Gunnison Nordic Club.
