McCurdy, Youngs Crowned Overall Winners at USA Triathlon Off-Road National Championships

Deanna McCurdy (Littleton, Colo.) and Nate Youngs (Boring, Ore.) earned overall titles on Saturday at the USA Triathlon Off-Road National Championships, held as part of XTERRA Cameron Park in Waco, Texas

Battling 90-degree heat and sunny conditions, athletes raced a course including a 1500-meter swim, 32-kilometer mountain bike and 10-kilometer trail run.

McCurdy successfully defended the overall title she captured last year in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, crossing the finish line in 3 hours, 28 minutes and 44 seconds to also win the women’s 40-44 age group title. She finished close to 20 minutes ahead of Kirsten Dehart (Hailey, Idaho), who placed second overall and in the 40-44 age group with a time of 3:49:15. Melanie Etherton (Austin, Texas) rounded out the overall podium and the same age group in third in 3:50:09.

“The run itself was hot. All I kept thinking during the first lap was, ‘I have to do a second lap and climb those Jacob’s Ladder steps (a steep 88-step staircase on the run course) again?’” McCurdy said. “And then you start questioning, ‘Can I do it? Do I have it left in me? I know the finish line is right there and I really just want to pull over.’ But once you hit the second lap, the nice thing is, because they spread out the men starting 10 minutes before the women, there were people throughout the course that kept you engaged — but it wasn’t clusters of people. So that made it a lot of fun, to start recognizing faces and cheering people on.”

On the men’s side, the fastest time of the day belonged to Hans Ryham (Houston, Texas), who finished in 2 hours, 57 minutes and 8 seconds. However, Ryham is an elite and therefore not eligible for age group awards. Youngs took the overall title in 2:59:17, finishing first in the men’s 35-39 age group. Andy Lee (Lakeway, Texas) finished a close second in 2:59:40, winning the men’s 45-49 age group, and Kyle Grieser (Marble Falls, Texas) placed third in 3:01:36.

“The competition was good,” Youngs said. “I knew that there were some guys down here that were winning everything, and they were in my age group. So I knew they were coming, I just didn’t know where they were at, so I had to just keep pressing on.”

The top 18 finishers in each age group, rolling down to 25th after applying the age-up rule, qualify to represent Team USA at the 2019 ITU Age Group Cross Triathlon (Off-Road) World Championships. The top 20 off-road triathletes per age group in the USA Triathlon off-road triathlon annual rankings as of Dec. 31, 2018, will also qualify for the World Championships.

The ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships will be held as part of the ITU Multisport World Championships Festival, set for April 27-May 4 in Pontevedra, Spain. Team USA is comprised of the top age-group athletes who qualify to represent their country at the ITU World Championships. Visit usatriathlon.org/teamusa for more on Team USA.
