Neumann and Hancox claim TreX Cross Triathlon Series season opener in Queensland

In2Adventure, the promoters of the 2016 ITU Cross Triathlon World Championship, recently kicked off their 2015/2016 TreX Cross Triathlon Series in Murrenbong Scout Camp, Kurwongbah Queensland. Below is the official report as well as two athlete race reports from the event.

Reigning Australian Cross Triathlon Champion Max Neumann and Leela Hancox took top honours at the Queensland Enduro…

QUEENSLAND—Mother nature turned on her charm on Saturday for near-perfect race conditions as Leela Hancox (QLD) and reigning Australian Cross Triathlon Champion Max Neumann (QLD) took top honours at the Queensland Enduro to kick off the 2015/16 TreX season calendar on Saturday.TreX Enduro Podium

Queenslander Drew Box led out of the water at the start with Ricky Smith in second, followed by Neumann in third. Box retired with an existing injury during the first bike leg and at the end of the 10 kilometre mountain bike ride. Brodie Gardner (QLD) was first onto the run with Neumann and Surf Ironmn champion Guy Andrews third. After the 4km run Neumann was first into the water for the second swim with Gardner second and Andrews third – the same order as the final podium.

Very happy to get the off-road tri season under away with second today in round one of the In2Adventure Tre-X season,” said Gardner. “Congrats to Max Neumann for the win and demonstrating why he’s the reigning Australian champ and to Guy Andrews for rounding out the podium.

“For me, glad to see the hard work is paying off in the pool to come out of the swim with only minimal ground to make up which enabled me to take an early lead on the bike.

“Unfortunately Max was to strong on the first run and held the lead for the rest of the race.”

In the elite women, Hancox, who raced her first off-road triathlon, held off fellow Queenslander Lucy Shewell.

The extremely popular Enduro format challenges long course competitors to take on the tough Murrenbong route, and after a heart pumping 350-metre swim, 10-kilometre mountain bike and 4-kilometre trail run, it’s back in the water to do it all again.  The event also included a one-lap Sprint (350m/10km/4km), Junior (150m/4km/1km) and Teaser (150m/4km/1km) course.GA Swim

With the 2015 X-Tri world champs being held in Sardinia, Italy (26-28 September), the In2Adventure team will immediately travel overseas following the weekend’s racing to represent Australia and entice amateur and professional athletes from all over the world to race Down Under next year.

In2Adventure recently launched its Pathway Partners programme to help local athletes and coaches connect and reach their individual goals of representing Australia at next year’s world champs. The TreX Series will be hosting three state qualifiers, including the Victorian Championships (28-29 November) in Bendigo, the Australian Championships (27-28 February) in the Snowy Mountains (NSW) and the Queensland Championships (16-17 April) on the Sunshine Coast.

TreX Enduro Race Report: Kim Beckinsale

The first round of the In2Adventure TreX Australian Series was held in Queensland at Murrenbong Scout Camp on 19thSeptember. The format for the main event was an Enduro format, which means that competitors complete two laps of the 350m Swim, 10k Mountain Bike and 4k Run course.


Unfortunately I was unable to race the course this year as I was still recovering from knee surgery so I have highlights from some of the Tri Adventure Crew – Gina Dunsdon, and Steve Wise.    Gina finished 1st female overall and 1st in the 40-45yrs; Gina did this race two years ago and is looking to try to qualify for the World Championships next year. This was Steve’s first time on this course, but he has plenty of experience at this type of racing, having competed at the ‘TreX – Back to Back’ in February, as well as four Xterra events one being Maui World Championships 2014. Lucy Shewell is very new to this style of racing having just completed the Gold Coast Adventure Race a few weeks ago, so was pretty excited to finish 2nd in the Open category and 3rd Female overall.

What aspects of the course did you like the most? Steve loved the run course because of the running through creek beds and so much single track running. Lucy enjoyed the run course the most because it was challenging yet fun at the same time whereas Gina liked the technical aspects both on the run and bike.

What was the hardest part of the event for you?   Gina thought the hardest part of the course was getting caught behind riders on some of the pinchy climbs which are sometimes unavoidable. 11057528_10154252239403312_6362449215458808134_oSteve though the hardest part was the rutty single track corners and little hill pinches. As Lucy has only just started mountain biking, so she found the mountain bike the most difficult – especially the first lap. This was her first experience encountering other riders overtaking her during a mountain bike event, so this slowed her down having to pull over to allow others to pass.

Did you like the enduro format? Gina really liked the enduro format because the swim was really enjoyable the second time round. Gina also mentioned “You also get a good feel for the course and know what to do better the second time around.” Lucy though it was a good challenge, she said “the second swim gave me an opportunity to cool down and relax my breathing before the second mountain bike leg.” Steve thought “you need that first lap to familiarise yourself with the course then second lap is race on!

They all said the race was extremely well organised and well run by the organisers and they would definitely be back to do it again……so a few training tips for the next one!

  1. Practice your transitions – The enduro format style of race is great as you get to practice your transitions twice, so you get a second chance, but for the qualifying races you only get one go, so you don’t want to be trying new things on the day.
  2. Get out on the Mountain Bike – Practice passing others and being passed, and getting through those little pinches! If you can’t ride them, practice getting back on and going as fast as you can!
  3. Practice running on single track – This is quite a bit different to running wide open easy trails, there tend to me more significant changes in terrain and lots of corners!

TreX Enduro Race Report: Luke Harvey

Well the day started a bit later than usual, leaving home at 5:30 am. It wasTrex_Enduro_2015-20150919-IMG_2804an hour’s drive to Murrenbong and transition/rego closed at 7:30. I was given slightly different gear whilst registering, instead of sticking your number around the seat post, it was placed on the handlebars, and there were also no helmet stickers. My race began at 8:33 and I began my warm up around 8am, as I was doing the long course enduro. The event was a lot different to an on road triathlon, and it was also a format I have never done before. Format was supposed to be 350 swim/10km cycle/4km run x2, however I took a slight detour on the swim making it about 500m due to turning at the wrong buoy. No one to blame but myself, however I did recover to still come second out of the water.

I had a slower transition than usual as I had to put on a camelback, my joggers (I haven’t got clip-ins for MTB) and helmet. Going into the ride I wasn’t sure what to expect, however I soon found out. It was mostly single track, which was dry, hilly and extremely rough. I decided to take the first lap slow as I took in all the technical parts and memorised the course for the second lap. I was lucky enough to only have to pass very few people on the single tracks, and passed most of them on the wide fire road linking two sections of the course. The trails are some of the best that I have ridden and I was keen for the second lap of the cycle. Having memorised the course, the second lap was a lot easier and I put less effort into peddling and more effort into technique and line choice. I mustn’t have been doing to well as I was being shaken to pieces by all the rough ground. I got off the bike feeling comfortable and took an Endura energy gel as I started running.



I hugely underestimated the run. I was expecting to be running along trails with a couple of hills and some mud, this was not the case. The run was following signs through uncleared trees, river beds and some very steep hills. My highlight of the run course would have to be the bog hole crossing and bomb diving into the muddy water. The run course was amazing and was more cross-country (XC) than any XC run I have ever done, including national XC.


By now I was feeling pretty hot and was keen to get back in the water for the second swim. I took off my wet muddy running shoes and put on my goggles before diving into the water and successfully completing the swim course without error. I climbed out of the dam and into transition where I began to catch the open wave, which had started 5minutes before me. Heading out for the cycle I hung onto the back of one of the open riders and passed him on the fire road before pulling away on the second lap. I had lots of ups and downs throughout the cycle and even managed to choke while having a drink. The cycle finished with a downhill going into transition. I was feeling good for the run and had no-one in sight so I slowed down and enjoyed all the ducking under trees, weaving through branches, jumping between rocks and bomb diving into the bog hole. The final part of the run was up a big grass hill towards the finish at the top.

Overall the race was lots of fun and the course was brilliant. Big thanks to In2Adventure and Trex for putting on such a great event, I would love to do another. I think I did quite well for my first off road triathlon as I came away with a first place finish in my age and a fifth place finish overall. In my opinion, the biggest differences between an on road and an off road triathlon would have to be the amount of people, the distances, and the different skill sets required.
