XTERRA Costa Rica

March 20, 2016

1.5k swim, 30k mountain bike, 12k trail run

The weather may have been hot in Costa Rica this past weekend, but the racing was even hotter! Less than 30 seconds separated first through third place for the men

Karl Shaw put over a minute into Costa Rican local Rom Akerson on the swim, with XTERRA World Champ Josiah Middaugh another 30 seconds down from Akerson. Middaugh did his usual thing and crushed the bike, moving past Akerson into second place. But Middaugh’s blistering bike split wasn’t enough to make up what he had lost in the swim to Shaw. All three men ran nearly identical splits on the 12k trail run to keep the same positions that they entered T2 – Shaw, Middaugh, Akerson.

The women’s race was a game of leap frog. Cait Snow lead out of the water, but was quickly caught by American Kara LaPoint, who was then caught by Miriam Guillot-Boisset and Sabrina Koester on the bike. LaPoint ran back up to, and passed, Koester to move into second. Koester struggled on the run, but held off Snow for third. Guillot-Boisset’s speedy bike and run splits solidified her lead and eventual win.

On a cool, cloudy Saturday morning, Henning Frey controlled the race from start to finish. With a quick first run he put nearly a minute on the competition. The fastest bike split of the day solidified his lead and he crossed the line more than 2 minutes in front of second place finisher Michael Waraus. Marc Bezner ran and rode with Waraus, but couldn’t hang on during the second trail run. Bezner finished third, just :09 seconds behind Waraus.

In the women’s race, Julia Ertmer dominated the field and took the win more than seven minutes in front of second place finisher Sabine Wolf.

On a lovely spring day, the XTERRA Denmark Off-Road Duathlon in Hedeland served as the Danish Championship for Off-Road Duathlon. Oivind Bjerkseth blazed the first run, putting minutes into the rest of the field. Benjamin Justesen put in an impressive performance on the bike and nearly caught back up to the leader, but Bjerkseth held him off with another speed run to take the win.

Nicoline Sorensen lead the women into T1 after the first run, but struggled on the bike. Kristine Norgaard put in the fastest bike of the day to move into the lead and hold it. Carol Rasmussen also caught Sorensen on the bike and held her off on the second run to take silver.
