“So, it was never hard!” The winner of the 19th Eifel Sparkassen Cross duathlon could not say much more shortly after the finish. From top to bottom smeared with mud,  Jens Roth (Tri Post Trier) claimed victory in 2:10:45. Roth saved just enough energy to jump through the finish banner. However, his victory was anything but certain for much of the race. After nearly nine-kilometers of the run course, a very different picture loomed. Stephan Radeck from Ghost Racing Team had left T2 with just over a minute lead followed by the chase group of Andreas Theobald, Jens Roth and John Franzky. After a long chase it was local hero Matthias Frohn to first crack. Then Stephan Radeck, overall winner of the Xterra German Tour 2015, was unable to maintain his lead from the bike.

Perhaps that was because the bike course was extended by two kilometers compared to previous years and was not necessarily easier. Softened by the rain of recent days the ground was slow and muddy. Many athletes learned this the hard way. Stephan Radeck opened a lead in the first of the two laps of the bike but lost the lead to Jens Roth and was forced to come to T2 in second place. Matthias Frohn, a mountain bike specialist, moved up throughout the bike but dropped to fourth during the run while Roth’s teammate, Andreas Theobald, moved to third with a strong run to secure the podium. In the women’s race, Katrin Holle Dung (Canyon) prevailed. In a total time of 2:35:25 hours she secured victory before Heike Zöllig from ASV Köln. With a broad smile and a lot of mud in the face Holle Dung said after the race: “Yes, it was tough.Even harder than in previous years. But it was still great fun. “For them it was a start-finish victory.

Chief organizer Urban Scheld pulled evening about the results: “The new range has been well received. I definitely get a lot of positive feedback, even if it was more difficult than in previous years “.
